My Heart is a Sea Bell: the Bedrock Demos is Hannah Frances’ seventh solo release, mastered by Amar Lal. This raw and masterful compilation of demo tapes and previously unreleased outtakes from the Bedrock (2021) record invites the listener into Frances’ personal journey through grief, loss and reconnection with self, all the while delivering an embracing warmth with her attentive finger-picking style and vocal depth. Self-recorded primarily in her mother’s attic in rural Pennsylvania, and urban spaces from Brooklyn to Chicago, the sounds of birds, wind, summer crickets and even sirens create an atmosphere of meditative presence, rooted in the landscapes that are so expertly woven into her lyricism. Frances offers her vulnerable storytelling through powerful vocals that surge in rhythmic undulation with her earthy guitar playing. The sweeping crescendos of sound coupled with deft use of silence, render the experience of aching and being held.
